The Right Side of History

Navigating the Israel-Hamas Conflict

In the last twelve days since it began, the Israel-Hamas conflict has dominated the headlines capturing the attention of those all over the world. As we scroll through social media, watch TV, and listen to the radio it can be easy to get overwhelmed by the mass amount of information that is being thrown at us. However, amidst these times it is important to recognize the great harm of spreading misinformation, propaganda, and hate speech. Sensitive times like these are when it is most important to seek the truth and maintain a balanced perspective.

Our understanding of this conflict is greatly influenced by the media. Despite their best efforts, credible news sources can still include bias, prejudice, or exaggerations. Narratives that minimize the suffering of one side or exaggerate that of the other are not uncommon. This distortion of reality only fuels anger, misunderstandings, and hatred.

To make informed judgments about the Israel-Hamas conflict, it's vital to educate ourselves about the history of the region, the complex nature of the situation, and the grievances of the people involved. The historical context, including the displacement of Palestinians and the creation of Israel, is essential to grasp the root causes.

Protect the People

We must not forget the most crucial aspect of any conflict, the innocent lives caught in the crossfire. Civilians on both sides suffer, and countless children, women, and men endure the horrors of war. This is where our focus should lie. The suffering of innocent regardless of their nationality is a tragedy. In the journey towards a resolution, we must prioritize humanitarian concerns over political allegiances. No one should be a collateral casualty in a conflict. Supporting any and all organizations that provide humanitarian aid and working towards de-escalation should be our goal.

Where to Learn

In our previous talks of credible, unbiased sources,  AP News is a nice outlet that I like to rely on. AP News has a live news section dedicated specifically to the Israel-Hamas conflict where there are constant updates. Their latest addition to this is linked here: AP News Israel-Hamas. Most reviews of AP News have considered it a central source and or slightly left-leaning source in recent years.

I would also highly recommend learning some of the history, there are many outlets listed here: Israeli-Palestinian ConflictThe Question of PalestineHistory of the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict Plus countless more after a quick search.

It is easy to get carried away by the social media presence of this conflict. Be considerate and smart about what you post and always verify information. Media can be manipulated and be deceiving, so it is best to focus on verifiable facts.

Rest in Peace to the thousands of innocent lives lost so far in this terrible conflict.

  1. I completely agree. Media is being manipulated and is manipulating the narrative on this horrific war. As if the war itself isn't barbaric enough, now violence is spreading around the world because of misinformation and indoctrination. I wrote a piece on my blog last week about this: https://modernmediacracy.blogspot.com/2023/10/atrocities-and-accuracy-crisis.html As media consumers and humans above all else, it's our responsibility to check fact check as much as possible. May all who have died rest in peace.

  2. Thanks for this well-written piece. The conflict between Israel and Hamas is very complicated, and it's important for us to keep up with the news and keep an open mind. Your strong emphasis on putting innocent lives first, no matter what country they are from, is a powerful reminder of what really matters. Your suggestions for resources are excellent places to begin for people who want to learn more. It's more important than ever to know how to use media, and I like how you said to check information before sharing it. May there be a peaceful end to the conflict and the pain soon.

  3. Great piece! Wars like these are often over politized because of our ties to the foundation of Israel. Truth be told, less time needs to be spent on justifying casualties and more time needs to be spent on making solutions. Great job.
