Twenty-two years ago today, four coordinated terrorist attacks took place in the United States. The attacks were carried out by an "Islamist extremist" group called al-Qaeda. Four airplanes were hijacked and two of them crashed into both the North and South Twin Towers. The additional two planes also went down the first at the Pentagon in Virginia and the second was taken back by the passengers and deliberately crashed into an open field. Almost 3,000 people were tragically killed in the attacks. 9/11 Memorial
Memoriam Through Media
With the passage of time, a growing portion of today's young adults (including myself) were not present and or not old enough to remember the tragic event that took place 22 years ago. However, thanks to the extensive documentation from media that took place this day the younger generations are able to access first-hand counts of what happened that day. The media was also a mass informer at this time. People relied on the media to give them all the details they could as quickly as they could. This accessibility to our history is crucial in helping educate and inform those who were not there or old enough to recall the event and the effects that followed.
Learning History From Media
We learn history so as to not repeat it. It is also true that the events of 9/11 showed the response of our country in a time of crisis. Immediately following the attacks, the government took extensive measures to attempt to protect the country from any future ones. The Department of Homeland Security was created as a result of their efforts, an institution that still stands today. Although there are countless efforts that were positively implemented there were many that were not. Since the attacks were from Islamists during this time thousands of Muslim Americans faced backlash and hate. Their common faith in Islam led to widespread discrimination and mistrust. These are the things we must remember in order to not repeat them. While protecting the rest of the nation the government should have also taken measures to protect Muslim Americans as well.
We can learn a lot from media outlets however we want to make sure we learn from the right ones. This can be any media post if you are able to pick out when there is bias or misinformation. This is not always easy as the narratives of different platforms can be so different. In seeking to read and learn a bit more about 9/11 there have been countless articles posted today. Some are informative pieces, and some are used to support specific viewpoints. These are great examples of different types of articles that all reference today's significance and 9/11.
This article simply focuses on the events that took place on 9/11. Has a short snippet in the beginning about President Biden's speech in Anchorage. On the same page is the live news footage from today where they speak with a Firefighter who reflects on the events and also talks about the health issues many have experienced as a result. Overall the article portion seems pretty factual and aims to inform.
This article is about President Biden's Speech and his claims of being on "ground zero" are likely false. Throughout this article, there are three separate links to additional articles that scrutinize choices made by Biden unrelated to 9/11. This article does not actually give any information about 9/11 or even Joe Bidens speech besides the singular line claiming he was present after the attacks.
This article is the one I would recommend. It has multiple aspects regarding 9/11 including President Biden's speech and its contents and what took place in Anchorage. It also follows Vice President Kamala Harris at ground zero and what they did in memoriam there. There is also a portion informing some specifics of the event 22 years ago as well as statistics.
These articles were chosen by searching "9/11 News" and picking three major news sources.
9/11 was such a devastating day for all Americans. Although I was not born, I have watched countless documentaries about it and take a moment of silence to remember all of the victims. I felt compelled to reply to this blog in particular because it seems befitting for the current war between Israel and the Hamas. I'm sure we are all hoping that this war will end soon and not expand over to the U.S. or any other country for that matter. However, the federal government is preparing for a potential attack so hopefully history won't repeat itself.
